Kenya has strong R&D capacity in the health and life sciences, a robust startup and investment ecosystem and is a leading producer and exporter of pharmaceutical products in the COMESA region.
However, the lack of entrepreneurial capacity in academia, coupled with high commercial risk posed in the development of innovative health technologies, has remained a serious barrier to attracting private sector investment to develop Kenya’s biomedical economy.
A results-based financing mechanism such as social impact bonds (SIB) and development impact bonds (DIB) offers innovative financing solutions that can leverage existing national strengths to de-risk investment for developing resilience for Africa’s health systems.
In this final workshop of the series, we will explore how triple-helix driven ecosystem intervention, to nurture and develop a medical devices and diagnostic innovation and industrial cluster, can be funded through an impact bond to attract world-class innovation talent and venture capital for home grown solutions and export-focused production.
